Man from the silver mountain.
Please can anyone put a name to this open chord.

Play a "D" chord but remove your 1st finger from off the "G" string just leaving the 2nd and 3rd fingers on the "E" and "B" string.

Anyone know what it is? I have done a bit a Googling but can not find a name for it.

D add 11

If you play a D major scale, the 11th note is a G.. which is what you're replacing the A note with when you remove the index finger.

i think :) although i could be wrong.. i'm pretty sure that's right though

Cheers Voodo ...but.

Close but no cigar.

The top "E" string is left open with this "X" chord?

I love the sound of it as it goes well in an easy rhythmic chord progression using...

Dsus2
D
and this unknown "X" chord.

Hi mate

As described in post #1 I can see 2 ways to describe the chord (on 4 strings)

Dadd4(no 5th)
G5add7/D

Your post #3 has confused me - if you're playing all 6 strings instead of your original description (play a D chord... - an open D is normally played on the top 4 strings only!)

The chord box in post 3 is critically speaking not really a Dadd11. The bass note in the chord is F# and even though this is present in the Dmajor triad (as is the extra bass A note), the chord should be described as some kind of F# chord or "slash"F# chord.

Although this should really be described as an Achord, slashF#, the most succinct name I can see for this is as a Dchord, slashF#...

Dadd4/F#

Properly naming guitar chords is a royal pain in the ass because the root note/bass note relationship matters! (much more than in piano chords.)

Nice chord BTW :)

Cheerz

Ahh sorry i thought you were playing without the low E! (i always play a D with the A string open too just to add depth to the 5th! It makes more sense for me now i'm constructing as a D barre A shape too as an add4, i was just using open before which was being terribly confusing! XD

Check me out with my flagging theory knowledge :D

Again, being pedantic, I'm sure that should be called D/A!

Jeez i am still clueless.

I am only a basic player of the guitar so try to play easier chords.

Basically the chord is strings 1,2,3,4 (E,A,D,G) open with strings 5 (B - 3rd fret) and 6 (E - 2nd fret) being the chord i am after.

Sorry if i am being a bit vague.

It's not vague Angus :D it's just that chord has several potential names it's hard to know which one is right lol!

And i'd say that the D with the A string in the bass is a good candidate for a slash chord too, although it's not as prominent as another bass note would be as it blends in and adds depth, rather than colour i think :)

Is this the chord fingering that you mean...?

To be very pedantic, the names given are not "exact", as the chord should be given a name in reference to "E" or "/E" (slash E) to denote the bass note, but I guess these names are the most accurate for your needs as the chord contains a very colourful mix of notes when compared to our normal naming conventions. The exception that proves the rule, haha!

As I said before, I think it is a very sweet sounding chord :)

The website I got this from is here:

http://www.all-guitar-chords.com/chord_name.php

(PS - the bass E string is called bottom E or string 6; and the treble e is string 1 or top e. The upper and lower cases are intentional as well.)

Cheerz dude
