Immortal (well, ...so far!)
G'day folks

Pulled the trigger on a Vox VT30 (with footswitches) today, courtesy of Dolphin Music online.

Hell, it's not a boutique antique and not massively expensive, but I'm really excited. I liked it when I tested it and it gets decent reviews and is acknowledged to be a good choice amongst most guitar enthusiasts. So c'mon courier - get it to me quick :)

Hope I made the right choice...

Cheerz

OK played it for a couple of hours.

Sounds really good.

Loaded with features as well. Only slight downside is that it takes a quite a bit of time to dial in the "right" sound. The thing is, this amp can probably deliver very close to the exact sound that you want, so it's tempting to search for that sound and can detract from actually playing guitar!

Overall I'm really pleased :D

The joys of a modeling amp! They really are amazingly convenient aren't they!?! I don't know exactly what features/amps yours has, but if you have a "tweed 4x10" (i think you do) amp, select it, roll the treble to 2pm the middle to 3pm and the bass to 10am and the gain full, then as a drive pedal (not so sure you'll have this but only boosts for a hotter sound) choose "Tube OD" set to about 1/2! This is one of my favorite tones and without the OD pedal is a lovely mellow blues tone and with the OD pedal is an awesome hot blues lead!

If you back off the tone on the guitar a little bit too, and fret and pick a note fairly hard, you should hear it "sag" literally it drops off a little and then comes back in after maybe 1/2 second! It's a very cool nuance of the tweed 4x10 :D

Cool

I'll give it a go...

Don't have a "selectable OD", instead the Gain is in-series with the eq and reverb.
I think What I can do is save both your suggestions as "manual programs" and use the footswitch to change between them both.

Right, I'm off to give this a try :)

Cool :) it works best with a lead tone and sounds really sweet with some cool blues licks (there is an opportunity to learn a couple of simple blues licks for you) :p

It's a shame you don't have the OD pedal option as it really makes it sing! But i think your gain setting is probably more saturated than mine in the first place so you might find a happy medium! :D

Do you have to "room" reverb on yours as well? That's something i love!

Yes the reverb is a room type.
The gain control works differntly for each amp model - I guess that it is modelled independantly for each amp!

For OD I'll probably invest in a pedal - got any recommends on an "inexpensive" pedal???

ah the joys of a new amp. take the time to experiment with the settings, once you've found them then you can concentrate on playing.

Ahh and the world of drive pedals :o

There's.. Fuzz.. Overdrive and Distortion mainly.. although some will cover the others like a distortion pedal will cover overdrive as well pretty much.. Fuzz is kind of on it's own :)

There are multi use pedals that do it all BUT.. depends what you want really, a lot of people use a boost pedal to boost the amps signal as that way they still get the amps sound instead of the pedals sound, pedals create their own tone, therefore say if you ran a Boss DS through a Budda amp or some other similarly amazing amp, you'd lose a lot of the amps characteristics to the pedal!

With your vox though i should think a pedal would be fine and there are some cool ones out there!

So what do you want? Hard saturated gain? Crunchy gain? Mild breakup? Harsh? Soft? :D

What do you like that sensei has?

Trouble is that I'm not sure what I'm after...

Johnny only has boss pedals, and I'm not sure I would want to stretch to that level of expense at my stage!

I've got the Fuzz pedal on loan, but only used it with the Crate - so I'll try that with the Vox. I'm sure I can borrow the Distortion and Super Overdrive in due course.
