Big Muff, a Boss pedal, or the Satchurator?; Which to buy?

Member Posts: 28 Group: Members Member #9,253 Joined: October 11, 2009	Well, I want a pedal that can give me clean non trebly high gain distortion tones, like rock and old punk, such as KISS, AC/DC, Ramones, or the Sex pistols, and then some also fuzzy mellow tones for Pink Floyd and Led Zeppelin type sounds. My onboard overdrive is enough for bluesy stuff, but frankly, I need to be able to kick the gain up to 11 without having it sound so noisy and trashy. I'm more or less liking the Big Muff or Satchurator more because the Big Muff is... well... used by David Gilmour and John Frusciante, and I really like the More button on the Satchurator because I like having two tone things without actually buying a multi-channel machine or anything, and I like the sound of the Satchurator. A Boss pedal, I like how affordable the older models are, but my local GC only has the newest one which for the cost, I'd rather get the Satchurator, and I can't test out the Satchurator or the Big Muff in store for various store related reasons. So, which would you guys personally recommend? I have a tele with P90 pickups and no other effects if that helps, although I definitely plan on buying a ton more things such as flangers, wah-wahs, acoustic simulators, the like.

EH Metal Muff. this would be very versitile as when turned down it does give you the older metal sounds but still has enough gain on tap to do modern metal as well. the EQ is awesome. if you check my Another Chance to Hear me play thread, the song Project 7 uses the EH MM for the rhythm guitar track. a cheaper option is to check out either the Deltalab Rock distortion or their Metal one. these are fairly inexpensive and yield great tones. the Metal one can be heard on the solo for Lifeforce. i haven't tried the satch pedal yet so can't comment on that one. a Boss DS-1 is a good pedal but honestly i haven't used mine in years as there are better ones out there at this point.

Member Posts: 28 Group: Members Member #9,253 Joined: October 11, 2009	Hm, well, I'm really liking the variety the metal muff gives with those EQ, perfect for the wide range of music I play, and I especially like the mid boosted up high for that twangy punky sound. Yeah, unless anyone has anything better they can recommend at the same price, then I might just be set on that.

However, I asked my guitar sensei today - his response was that BOSS pedals are pretty much the best tone for the value. That's the reason he's gone for 2 x 20 pedal setups of nothing but BOSS pedals. 1 for himself and a duplicate for his student... (the student setup isn't assembled yet, but the pedals are all there, boxed, and ready to go when all the cables and power leads are finally purchased.)

Well, I think I'm sold on either the Metal Muff or the Satchurator, and either way, I could return it if it doesn't suit my tastes. I probably wouldn't look to a pedal that has the word Metal in it's name for versitality, were it not for your recommendation, so thanks.

Thinking about the array. 3 rows. 5, 5 and 5/6, I think it's 16... It's for teaching! So yeah 16 pedals each Can't remember them all, but the ones I do remember off the top o' ma heed are: Distortion, Fuzz, Overdrive, Delay, Reverb, Chorus, Phaser, Flanger, Octave, Compressor, (EQ), (tuner) and maybe wah and maybe tremolo... (the tuner and EQ are included in the 16.) Agree it's a lot of pedals - particularly when the focus is on learning to play guitar, but very useful and an extra selling point for attracting and keeping his 'students'. Teaching guitar/bass is his full-time job/business...

If you have a good flanger/phaser, you should be able to tone it down to do chorus (correct me if I'm wrong), a fuzz overdrive AND distortion just feels a bit overkill, especially since, as you said, it's boss pedals and they made on specifically designed to match both distortion AND overdrive. Fuzzboxes.... well yeah I'd still have a fuzzbox and distortion so no complaint there. A reverb, well, my amp is pretty crappy and it's reverb is still great. but then again, I'm far from an expert, and half of the things are just personal preferences. (Like Octaves and tremolo effects)

It's built on a shelf, not on the floor - so it's a 'hand-job' to engage the desired pedal(s). Not that I've done much in that department, yet. The intention, I think, is to educate studes not only on what the pedals sound like, but also what they do technically with the sound signal. I also agree that distortion, overdrive and fuzz are similar enough to not really need 2, but for lessons I think it's also to engage the 'right' pedal(s) for any particular song. Another bonus is that studes get the chance to demo each one and are therefore better informed on which pedal they actually want to go out and buy for themselves! Sorry to hijack the thread, dudes!

Is it just me who hates the Electro Harmonix Big Muff? Dont get me wrong, i love most of their pedals but I demo'ed it the other day to a customer and we both looked at each other and said this sucks. Its buzzy and unpleasant. Id go for the Boss or better still the Blackstar HT-DIST. For metal the EHX Metal Muff is worth a look with a nice mid scoop. Edited by crowhue, May 3 2011, 07:14 PM.
