Hey I just got a squier affinity strat and AMP etc. I am now wondering what the best way to start playing is. I have started following a beginners DVD I got with my package and have been playing some power cords. Should I start trying to play some simple songs? It would be interesting to find out how other people first started. Thanks

Hi Kevlav The most important thing about learning to play guitar is to enjoy it. Don't put any pressure on yourself so spend some time with your DVD learning chords and scales and an equal amount of time messing around. There are numerous tutorials on youtube so check them out and experiment. Don't ever feel overawed because we all do (even guys who have played for decades) so just keep at it and have fun. |

As a fellow Newbie to Guitar , I found working on scales and jsut going up and down the fret with the scales to help a lot just getting your right/left hand cordination down. Guitar certainly is not what I would call a easy instrument to pick up. But its certainly fun

Hey kevlav, hope you're enjoying this guitar lark ![]() I have a blog on this forum about my journey through learning guitar. I started nearly a year ago and found everything very difficult, but lots of fun trying to master. With a bit of perseverance you can achieve quite a lot in a short space of time - it just takes a whole heap of practice, so make sure you try to follow some sort of progressive program that doesn't jump around too much as that might be a bit frustrating. Just keep picking it up and having fun ![]() Cheerz dude |

If you don't have any musical background, learn the basics about notes and harmony itself. Also, if I were you I would practice playing scales (all modes). As someone said already ITT, you have to enjoy it so learn the songs you want to learn! Find the balance between learning the theory and techniques versus learning (from tabs or transcribing) songs. |
