Hey everyone, my name is Eoin and I'm 18. I have a Strat knockoff I got brand new for around 80 euro and an Artec GP-10 amp for 50 euro new too.

hxxp://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Elevation-Full-Size-Electric-Guitar-Black-Amplifier_W0QQitemZ220456691088QQcmdZViewItemQQptZUK_Musical_Instruments_Guitars_CV?hash=item33543e2590&_trksid=p3286.c0.m14

This is not the exact same guitar but it's identical to mine

Here is the amp

Ok so here is my issue :

When I play it sounds ok but I'm easily demotivated. I think it's me but sometimes I think my guitar just sounds bad. When I play certain riffs they just don't sound right. I've been playing acoustic for around a year and electric only a few months. One day I randomly messed with my truss rod not knowing what it could do and I think I may have messed with the neck etc. Then I read today about intonation and mine is out on a few strings. I tried fixing it but I can't/dunno how on my saddle.

For example on this riff

----------------|------------------|------------|
----------------|------------------|------------|
------0-------0-|------0-----------|------------|
----4-------5---|----7-------0-----|--0-----0---|
--2-------3-----|--5-------4-------|2-----------|
0-------0-------|0-------5-----5s3-|----3s5-----|

the open G totally ruins the sound, since it's meant to blend in but it makes this weird out of tune noise and sounds like crap when I play it, but its in tune? I dunno what to do. And I'm having trouble with muting too, dunno why, I think and hope it's just me, not my gear etc

I tried messing with the saddle and when I get the 12th fret note on a string in tune the open one goes out and when I get the open one in tune the 12th goes out, I'm so fed up. I dunnp whether I should buy some new strings tomorrow and try again, hoping new strings will make a difference, or just bring my guitar in for a setup in the store. Or maybe just forget about it and save for a new one? Sometimes when I'm playing mostly my g string will sound a little out even tho it shows up as tuned on the tuner, and some strings rattle or buzz off the neck, it's really demotivating and annoying

Any advice on my three options I listed above would help ikmmensley

Ahh a badly set up guitar huh :)

You can either have a crack at sorting it yourself, or take it to a shop for probably £30-35 to have a setup done with new strings!

The truss rod is a pretty delicate part of the whole setup and isn't something to mess around with unless you know what it does or how it does it! Basically it counters the pull of the strings, so if you have fret buzz i'd say it's possibly too tight! If you look down the length of the neck like you're aiming a rifle, there should be a slight curve AWAY from the strings, just very slightly, that's a good base to work from anyway! There are accurate measurements which are ideal but people set their guitars up to suit themselves anyway! Turning the truss rod clockwise will tighten it and make it straighter OR bend it the wrong way!! Not good.. Turning it anti clockwise will loosen it so you get the slight curve you want, if you have a big curve then you would need to tighten it to reduce the curve, i hope that makes sense?

The buzzing could also be because of a poorly cut nut, if the groove is too deep then the string will gently touch one of the first 2 or 3 frets when it vibrates which quickly deadens the sound and sounds crap! To see if that is the problem just push down all the strings on the first fret, if it hardley needs to be pressed at all then it's too close, there should be a noticeable gap. If this is the case you need a replacement nut which i'd advise you took it to a shop for! nuts are cheap and they'd probably replace it while doing a general service for small extra cost!

Intonation is a little confusing at first and probably best i link you to a site for how to adjust it rather than butcher an explanation myself and like said in the video i've linked, the intonation is the final thing you'd do in a setup as all other changes affect the intonation! :)

It could just be that it's a cheap guitar, cheap guitars tend to sound bad. It also could be that it's a cheap amp.
