Re-strung my acoustic...; ...broke a string

Damn it

Invested in a set of D'Addario phosphor bronze 11s - quite expensive, but came recommended.

So all was going well, I'd even lem-oiled the fretboard, then after the first tuning I was giving the strings a gentle stretch when TWANG. The top e snapped. Right at the top of the join winding at the bullet end. :(

I wasn't using much force, merely lifting the strings gently away from the fretboard.

It was my first time re-stringing an acoustic, so I don't know whether I did something incorrectly. Maybe the ball end winding was fitted badly or pinched under the bridge-pin? Or should I not be stretching acoustic strings like my electric guitar strings, which can take a considerable force!

Anyways, I've replaced it temporarily with a spare Rotosound electric 10, just for the time being until I can get another set of strings. And I'll make sure I buy at least 2 sets this time. I wonder whether Rotosound do acoustic strings and supply 2 top e strings per set as they do with their 'leccy strings?

Any advice out there on what to do to avoid a similar snap mishap next time?

Cheerz

when strtching strings i always tune to pitch and then play a little then retune maybe a tiny bit higher but not much. sounds like you had a bad string to me. i suggest taking it easy on the strings and not trying to stretch them to quickly. this takes more time but the string usually will last longer and stay in tune better (at least for me)
and now for something completely different

Will go easier from now on - and try to ensure the string is nicely seated in the bridge-pin slot, just in case that was an issue!

Yeah i think it sounds like a bad string too, you get them from time to time, i quite often find i get a set and one of the thinner strings will have a slight kink in it somewhere, and i've had strings unwinding themselves from the ball at the bridge under extreme bends! So just a little confirmation that they are a little flawed sometimes!

Thanks for that chaps.

Being as I was a virgin, I thought it might've been something I did wrong.
Even then, though, I was still suspicious about the location of the snap!
