Ok folks

Visited a guitar center (lol @ spelling) today and almost walked out with a petite Crate V5 tube amp for US$99.99.

It's kinda small and is pretty much the size that I'm looking for and sounds pretty rich, full and clean in the shop, but does anyone have any comments...

Seems like a bargain, no?

haven't seen one yet but for that price its sounds good. just remember that US power is different than UK so it it wouldn't work without a power converter in the UK.
and now for something completely different

I already checked the power supply my friend.

The Crate has a dip-switch to select input voltage 115V/230V - unlike the Vox I looked at (and I thought Vox was a British make!).

Do you reckon that the lack of effects etc would be a problem, as the Crate is very basic with only vol, tone and a single input?

Ah now this you see is the trouble.. deciding if you want a pure tube tone.. or lots of versatility in tones, effects and amp models at your disposal :/ Your choice on that one though.

most high end amps don't have a bunch of built in fx. just get an overdrive or a distortion pedal and perhaps a delay pedal and a wha. or you could get a multifx unit and use that. some of rocks greates moments were recorded on a little tube amp like that.

Bought it today :D B)

Like the sound of it back in my hotel room. A colleague is a decent guitarist, so I got him to play through it in the shop - sounds pretty damn clean and fullsome.

The shop only had 1; the one on the shop floor - so I wangled a $15 discount, too :D

Also bought spare power valves - by mesa boogie - so I'm tempted to swap one stright in as some reviews say that the fitted tubes are not te greatest on the planet...

Thoughts on that???

BTW - sig now needs to be changed, too

Ah bargain!

As for swapping tubes, stock tubes are normally pretty average so it wouldn't hurt to stick better ones in! I don't know about the bias on that amp, a few amps have an auto bias feature to automatically set the valves up properly (nothing is simple in the world of guitars :P) So if it does need biasing after changing the valves (which i think would be fairly likely but maybe not, i don't know that much about it) that would be a trip to a qualified amp kinda person i think.

Thanks chap.

I'll look into getting it set up with a new valve when I get back to UK :)
