I'm looking to buy a digital 4 track for use on my own with electric/acoustic guitar, vocal, etc. I've read good reviews of both the Tascam DP004 and Boss Micro BR but can't find ANYWHERE a comparison between the two, e.g. how easy they are to use, what the built-in mic is like, etc.

Didn't help that when I looked around in shops I found one place that sold each, but neither sold both so they were both just trying to flog me the one they had as the best ever.

Was wondering if anyone could give some advice?

most good digital recorders are 8-track now and are fairly cheap so thats the route i would suggest. i have a Zoom. still learning but i did lay down a bass track over a preset drum pattern today. i'll be working on the guitar parts in the next few days. those 4 tracks you mentioned are fairly limited.
and now for something completely different

if you need the portability of a 4/8 track there are better people to advise you :D

Have you considered an audio interface for your PC? i found it way more flexible, easier on the production side of things and LOADS of plugins for effects and all sorts. With a laptop its about as portable as an 8 track anyway. Cost can be an issue though, 200 notes should get you a decent multitrack interface and a couple of reasonable mics. Only makes economic sense if you already have a PC and a software mixer.... or don't mind using torrents :)
