I've been noticin recently that although i've got a pretty meaty bottom end, my top end sounds really thin. I've no idea how i could "beef it up" so i'm puttin it forward to the brain trust that is this board for help.

Many thanks

Ok i guess this is your ESP with the EMG's? If yes then upping your string gauge would help, i'd assume you have 9's on at the moment? 10's would be a little better! But what should make the most difference is playing with the tone controls on your amp and guitar! roll the treble off on the amp, little by little until it's sweet rather than harsh! Also roll off just slightly on the guitars tone control which should plump up the tone a bit and take the edge off of it! It's also worth bearing in mind that high up the fretboard on the B and particularly the E string, things never tend to get that meaty :)

just curious but do you use a scooped tone? this results in a thin sounding high end. also it depends on how you get your distrotion. if its just the amp in high gain mode you lose high end. let me know.
and now for something completely different

Cheers for the suggestions guys, i'll give um a go tomorrow. I'm gettin the distortion from the amp and there's a handy wee "Scoop" button thats used and apparently my mids knob doesn't work (according to sound guy at the studio we went to to record) and i dunno if i'm gettin loads of mids or not enough. The strings that i use are 10s already. Definately have to mess with the treble tho cos it's up full bore just now

Your mid knob doesn't work as in at all?? Or just not that effectively? If you use the scoop button then it will knock the mids off to next to nothing and take any depth out of treble notes as middle covers the "bassier/sweet" end of the higher notes, and having your treble on full tilt won't help so it looks like with a little fiddling you can get it sorted! :D

yeah killing the mids will detract from the tone. i know some bands do it but they tend to have way better gear and soundmen to tart it up so it sounds good. the other thing is that when using high gain in amps you loose some highs (or alot in some case). i use a distortion pedal thru the clean channel to get better control over tone and distortion. just a thought.

was considerin usin a distortion pedal through the OD1 channel (I use the OD2 channel on my amp) and usin that for rhythm and the OD2 for lead, will need a d#new distorion pedal tho. My Boss DS-2 has had it lol, sometimes doesn't switch on, not a fan of the distortion from it either

well then off to the shop for distortion pedal shopping. you might want to try an EH metal muff or a Digitech Hardwire metal.
