Ok.. a good tip i can give you, is when you start playing out of the box, you can pick any bunch of notes pretty much! But the art is to resolve it to a pleasing note AND to do it fairly quickly, by quickly I'd say no more than 3 or 4 notes or a few more played quickly!! The second thing to bare in mind with this is to hit a note to resolve which compliments the backing! The reason this works is kinda like pre empting in your head what you might expect to hear, if it doesn't resolve melodically it's going to sound weird, so as long as you provide a guiding rail for a person to stay on while they are listening, it won't be unpleasant. You'll often hear Hendrix do this, he plays some strange stuff either out of key or that doesn't fit within the theoretical structure of a piece of music, but before you get the chance to go "ooooo that sounds crap" he resolves it back into key and it makes you go.. ahhh genius ![]() Jazz is ideal for this kind of playing just due to it's nature. Check out some George Benson on you tube as well, he was good at resolving phrases. |

when i do this is ususally use triplets. of course your hammer-ons and pulloffs have to sound off well in order for this style to work. as for going outside well let your ears guide you for that. if you want to try some fusion then listen to 70s era jeff beck or gary moore fromt he 2 albums he did with Coloseum II. you can also mix up economy pickiing with al dimiola style pick every note runs as well. |
| and now for something completely different | |

And of course i should bare in mind what it is you're actually asking Try ascending and descending scales but using economy picking, say from the high E string sweep up the first 2 notes then alternate pick 2 different notes on that string, then sweep down another 2 strings and pick another couple of notes on that string, then maybe back up one string, i find it very un natural to economy pick as alternate picking serves me well enough most of the time but it will become more natural feeling eventually. Other than that, i find if i think about little licks i play, and then go through them slowly and figure out where the most economic route from string to string is, there are quite a few that would be much more sensible played with economy picking. So yeah, check out your existing licks and see if you can tighten up your picking on them! |
