I'm looking for a new amp. It may be some time before i get since I'm buying a new 2008 American Standard Strat, but I'm going to start looking now. I already have an Epiphone ES-335 Dot. I will mostly be playing American Alt Rock kinda stuff, SSPU, Smashing Pumpkins, stuff like that. I don't know amps as well as I know guitars so any help would be nice EDIT: I thought I should say my budget will likely be about £300 Edited by silversun, Dec 14 2008, 11:11 PM.

peavey should be paying me for all the freakin advertising i do for them. first choice Peavey Valveking. one of the higher end Vox Valvetronix amps would probably work fairly good for you as well. |

Are you gonna want to play this amp live or is it for bedroom use? |

Live use and probably practice as well. The biggest venue around here holds about 250 people. |

Cool ok, Monwo made 2 great suggestions for you there then. just a note the peavey comes in a 112 and a 212, 112 is 1 x 12" speaker.. 212 is, you guessed it.. 2 x 12" speakers the differences are the 212 has more power and headroom, kinda essential if clean tones at loud volume are important to you, and the 112 will hit it's sweet spot at a more suitable level maybe, but won't have the clean headroom of the 212, the 112 should do you no problem for 250 people though. The Vox Valvetronix are not full valve amps but have a valve in the preamp which does work to an extent. The 50 or 60 watt should be plenty loud enough! I have the 60 and it's a sweet sounding amp once you get used to the settings to use for the different amp models! The Vox comes with modulated effects and amps by the way so they are very versatile from twangy country to thumping nu metal. Slightly more expensive than the Peavey i think. I'd also look into second hand Fender, either the Blues Deluxe (40watt) or Blues Deville(60 watts). These won't be as naturally good as the Peavey at Distortion on their own but if you put a decent pedal through them they are better amps in my opinion. But they cost 2 x as much. Again i think both of these come in a 1 x 12" and a 2 x 12" and the same principles of headroom apply as with the Peavey. Hope that helps

Thanks, for the help. I looked at all of them and the Peavy looks more up my street. I looked through a few of the other threads too. You really are pushing the ValveKing monwo! |

you would think that i did or at least would get kickbacks from peavey. funny thing is that i don't have one myself. the reason i promote them is that they are affordable and have a decent tone. the other thing is general availability as i try to recomend gear that can be easily found. the valveking is so far the best valve amp in its price range hands down. for the record i have an old Legend rock & roll 50 (used by billy gibbons of ZZ Top on Eliminator and other ZZ albums after) which haven't been make in over 25 years and a Crate V32 which i bought for a price so low i couldn't say no. its a nice 30 watt class A amp but isn't a metal machine so i can't often recommend it because often the person asking plays metal.

Oh.. Laney might be another worth looking into, not quite as affordable as Peavey but good British rock amps! Do you have Laney in the US Monwo? |

Laney's can be found over here but they aren't very widespread. the big box places like Guitar Center may have a couple of models on their website but not in the stores for people to play. i believe that the House of Guitars has them here but i haven't been there in a while. i liked the couple of Laney's i've tried over the years. |

If there's a Bugera dealer there, I'd check out their 1990. It's based of a JCM900, without having to drill a hole in your wallet. Individual reverb controls, a half power switch (120 to 60 watts) and just overall tube goodness of a 5881: essentially a 6L6 with an attack of an EL34. So you get nice cleans with a gain channel versatile for your music needs. |

You can't go wrong with Roland cubes, I find them great for all genres of music. + the Roland cube 15x is pretty cheap and has loads of effects and knobs to mess around with. |
