I've been playing guitar for quite a long time now. I'm not master but play really quite well. Recently somone gave me a bass guitar... I haven't really gotmuch time but my fiance (since I can play guitar...) wants me to teach her to play the bass. I could do it pick wise but finger... What shoould I advise her. Obviously sound and tradition is one thing... but I want it to be easier for her, so that she doesn't get disscouraged. The problem is that she's got an extremely small hand and fingers. thanx

Actually it's all about style and preference, I believe a famous bassist by the name of Cliff Burton uses his fingers and look how good he became. But there have been bassists that use picks that are just as good. Like I said its all about preference.. |

try both. i play a little bass myself and use both styles. i'm way better with a pick but can do some finger style just nothing really fancy. it depends on what you are playing. funk is way better with fingers and speed metal is often better with a pick. |
| and now for something completely different | |

Thanx for your comments; we stick to fingers now and it seems to be wroking fine. For rock/heavy it's just ok. |

Heh. I'm so different to some of you guys. I play both bass and 6 string but I seem to have more of an affinity for bass so I play 6 string like I would a bass - not only fingerstyle but I keep wanting to put my hand in "bass position" and pluck upwards a lot! The upshot is, I'm just one of those non-pick people. It's as difficult for me to use a pick as it is for some of you to use fingers... so after aeons attempting to use a pick on 6 string, I've given up and accepted that I'm just a hands-on kinda gal. Different strokes for different foks, I suppose... ~Cat~ EDIT - Just noticed how old this thread was. Ooops... Edited by Cat, Feb 11 2012, 08:24 AM.

I think it can very by a few things. Does she prefer to have long finger nails? if so then pick Do you prefer the Bass by the tone of a pick to the strings or the fingers for that natural sound and feel. Later down the road a pick may be faster for some to roll with like the Big Stubby 3mm picks. But thats about it for me on the topic ATM.. Cheers! |
