I'm looking for a good practise amp. I'm going to be playing mainly at a concrete-isolated room, so I will be able to play a bit loud, so preferably an amp that doesn't give off much noise or is a feedback nightmare. Separate EQ is a good thing. Great cleans are preferred, and if the amp has a good distorted channel, it needs to come with a footswitch. As for budget... I'm going to try get a second-hand amp. But I'd say no more than 2,000 SEK. It's a practise amp, I'm not looking for a great sound, just something that sounds good and works good as a practise amp. 2,000 SEK is around 280 USD. I know about the Marshall MG's and Valvestates, about the lower-end Peaveys, but there are some I haven't really worked with. How do Randall amps work? What about Orange? How are the lower-end Hughes & Kettner amps? Any other amps you could suggest? Edited by mynameisDavid, Oct 8 2008, 01:01 AM.

Seeing as I dont have much time, I'll give you a brief answer. Please, for your own sake, stay away from the Marshall MG's. If you absolutly MUST go for a Marshall on that price range, go for the Valvestate. Preferably the older model ones. Lower end peavys....for example, the Bandit lines, have terrible on-board distortion, and the clean channels are lacking somewhat. To be honest, they make good power amps, but as guitar amps.....dont bother. One nice fature on them is the ability to choose what power rating you want, 50/100 Watts. But thats a gimmick, seeing as they dont sound any good on either. Randalls. Gorgeous amps. But, in my opinion, dont do anything other than Metal, unfortunatly. But they do do Metal very well. Orange....Excellent TUBE amps. Im not too keen on the SolidState ones, though. Hughes and Kettner, awesome. Even the Solid states produce better tone than a lot of higher-end tube amps I've heard. If I was to pick any amp, it would be a HK. The Matrix/Warp/Attax series are very affordable, especially second hand. And hell, the germans built them like tanks. -Mick. |

you might want to try a Vox valvetronix. now if its just a practice amp then one of the low wattage tube amps might work for you. i have an old Boss mg-10 which i love, if you can find one i'm sure it would be cheap. |

Thanks for the advice! I didn't know Randalls made good amps x) going to try them and see if I can get ahold of a good H&K. I've never tried a Vox, I should give them a try really. Anything I should consider when trying out a Vox? |

Boss is Roland not randall. randall does make some good amps but not in the price range your looking at. i don't think that boss makes amps any more to bad the one i have is great. the only thing you have to worry about is if you like the vox (or any amp) or not. cheaper SS amps arenot gonna have spectacular tone but the cleans will be clean for sure. they will lack a bit of character though. SS clean will always sound the same unlike a tube clean. |

if you look at my original post you'll see i mention a Boss mg-10 (not to be confused with the marshall) practice amp. now on the clean sound i've found that if i plug in to one of my SS amps and don't touch the settings that it sound the same today as it did yesterday etc. there really doesn't seem to be any real change in sound. i'm not saying that all SS clean tones will be the same regardless of amp maker. |
