ok easy ?
all the way back = bridge pu
1 forward = bridge and middle pus
2foward (straight up middle position) = middle pu
3foward = middle and neck pus
4 foward (all the way forward) = neck pu
and now for something completely different

You'll probably find that most of the time you're using either Position 1 (all the way down) to get a more trebley, clear sound, or position 5 (all the way up) for a bassy, thicker sound. Personally I find on most strats that the middle position lacks character, and Position 2 and Position 4 (assuming its a 5 way switch and not a 3 way) will mix the middle pick-up with the Bridge or Neck pick-up respectively, but give a weaker sound than the Bridge or Neck pick-up on their own, which for most things I play is no good, but then I'm often playing quite high gain rock/metal.

The best thing to do might be to play a lick in Position 1, then switch to Position 2 and play it again, then switch to Position 3 and play it again and so on, and do this with licks from whatever different styles you play, experiment and find what sounds best for you with the kind of music you're playing.
