I'm thinking of getting some equipment to help with recording; I'm recording onto a Tascam DP-01 8 track, and I'm looking to get the following: - compressor mics (small diaphragm and large, the latter specifically for vocals with the former for small instruments such as glockenspiel, banjo) - effects board (specifically reverb for instruments/vocals recorded through a mic, but perhaps one with a few different effects for use with guitars). A few questions: first, I've been told that, due to not being able to plug a 'phantom power' mic directly into the 8-track, I will need to buy some gadget that can mediate between the two - do you know what this might be, how much it might cost and where I might find it? Secondly, if I want to get a decent effects board, do you have any recommendations (please bear in mind that I can't really afford much over £200 and I want to try and spend less than that). Also, finally, does anyone who has ever used the DP-01 know how to record more than 8 tracks? I can't seem to work it out. thanks in advance Alastair |

Ok, first question, I believe you need a mic preamp to use a condensor mic which requires phantom power and since your 8 track doesn't have one built in, try this.... http://www.guitarampkeyboard.com/en/tube-mp/67655 Now I'm no expert on preamps, so I can't tell you if that is a good one or not, I just know, it will get the job done. Second question, you want a multi effects pedal I am guessing? So you can use many different effects for guitar? I have no idea if that will work with vocals though, especially if you are using a condensor. You would probably be better off recording with Logic Pro or something similar and recording the guitar and vocals dry (no effects) and adding the effects on the computer, it would work better that way anyway, then your sound is more versatile once on the computer. Can't help with the last question since I don't own a DP-01. But, it's an 8 track, meaning unless it has hidden tracks, it can only record 8 tracks at once. Why do you wan't more than 8 tracks? Record the instruments seperate, the most channels you could ever need would be for drums, and they only take 8 at the most. Either that or get a mixer with more channels. In my opinion, all the instruments should be recorded seperate though to stop sound bleeding onto another track. Hope some of this helped you

Bullet is right the only reason u'd need more than 8 tracks is if u were doing live (mixing board), which your not. i;d recomend a Phatom powered mixer over a singe mic preamp tho, this will allow you to use more than one condenser at once http://www.guitarampkeyboard.com/en/peavey-pv-6/66861 something like that

Not perfectly familiar with the Dp1, but I am pretty sure you dont need more than 8 tracks for this reason: Record drum tracks first, you might need several mics so itll eat up your tracks. Mix the sound to your desire. Then bounce all of the drum tracks to one single track, and record other instruments on the spare tracks. Bouncing all drum tracks to one track = more space for other instruments. You dont seem to be looking for drum mics though, so I guess your not gonna record drums. In that case, why would you need more than 8 tracks? Unless you're overdubbing. Iv done several out-of-house recording sessions, where I would record songs for other bands. I use thier recording gear, but bring my own mics or get the client to rent some. (Amateur recording of course, but im getting a good portfolio) Point is, on some of these sessions, I would be using nothing more than an 8-track Boss, and I would be recording Drums, Guitars (Sometimes 2) Bass, Vox (sometimes two, three or four) and sometimes keyboards. Bounce the tracks, you dont need more than 8. If you find out how to access more than 8 tracks on the tascam, that helps. |
