I am getting back into actually doing some recording again. Nothing exciting....just mucking about with ideas at this stage. I have been thinking that despite Garage Band being as wonderful as it is......I think it's about time I got me a Bass. SO.....My question is (JohnBrigade) What do you think? I have been offered a nice P Bass that I quite like. I seem to be able to make some sort of sense of it and it actually sounds pretty damn nice too, BUT...Just when I was about ready to go ahead, a Mate mentioned that he'd consider selling me his Musicman. Now I am a BIG Musicman Fan......But I wonder whether it is really going to end up being a bit wasted as I will only be using it occasionally. I love everything about it and have to say that IF I were working as I used to.......well then I doubt we'd be even talking about it. But as I say....this is purely Home Recording for my own amusement and I wonder whether it's just that bit too good to be consigned to my feeble attempts? It's a Stingray 2EQ by the way.Any comments are welcomed.......as always!

Use the bass snyth on Logic Pro, it sounds pretty realistic. But I guess your never going to get it as real as an actual bass are you? I have always had a liking for Ibanez basses, but you might think different I'm not really a bass guy

Me neither
It amazes me that I have gone this long playing (or TRYING to play )Guitars and I haven't really ever tried to play a Bass properly!!Might prove an interesting experiment....................... Or NOT, as the case may be! |

I got a bass and picked it up really quick, the only thing u gotta learn rele is right hand technique, which can be picked up pretty quickly. I got a shortneck bass to make it more like a guitar thus easier for me to pick up P.S 500th post in just over a month of being here.. O YAH! |

Sorry Rob - I never saw the original post. RIght then - I have a couple of P basses and a stingray (a 3EQ). Some say that the 2EQ is more of a stingray than the 3EQ - the 2EQ version was the original and some will say the best. I've not compared the two, but I like my 3 EQ and daresay it's more versatile. The EQ on the 3 band models operates as a cut and boost from centre for bass, middle and treble - the 2 band models are cut only - bass/treble. Depending on how old it is (PM age and how much he's asking) it might have string mutes on the bridge saddles which are now quite sought after I believe and add (or takeaway depending on your opinion) from the tone. My stingray is INCREDIBLY versatile and can give me pretty much any tone I'm after - thuddy bassy noises to middley Flea like honks and ringing treble all all variations in between. The market's really flat at the minute and I've seen a few go for about the 500 mark - which is what mine cost me imported from the US. They're great basses, look great and sound great. I love my precisions too, but they're a totally different sound - Vol up full, tone up full is the only way to use em and they don't really do much else except that classic P thump. Think the motown sound. I've got one strung with roundwound strings and one with flats for that proper kick. The rounds make it a bit brighter, but not a lot - big fat neck on a P which a lot of people struggle with apparently to begin with - I have big hands so it wasn't so much of a problem and I struggled more with the string spacing on a jazz. The stingray neck is sort of somewhere between a jazz and a precision - more towards the precision, but they're (depending on age) satin/gun oil finished so they're smooth and fast to play. There you go!! That's what I think anyway |

Thanks John, that is exactly what I had hoped you'd provide.
So it might be a worthwhile thing to hunt down the 3EQV ersion then! Not a problem as it happens. I'll keep you posted as to where I end up next!
