Ok I have taken the plunge and decided Im going to try and get down a complete number. For my sins I have chosen Apache (Shadows) not my taste but I feel I can make progress on this one. What is a comfortable chunk to learn at a go, and should that chunk be played with exact precision over and over again and feel like second nature before moving on to the next? What sort of breaks should i take say in a 2 hour practice, I notice that overconcentration can actually cause me to make mistakes, ie a 10 minute break when i return the first couple of run throughs are smooth |

No..... I think that you are approaching this in the correct way. Take Breaks......even IF it is just taking a wander round the room or popping outside to get a few lung fulls of fresh air
As far as learning in Blocks.......Works for some people but not so well for others. What I tend to do is try and get a grasp of the whole thing first....and THEN break it down into sections. I also applaud your choice of starting material. Whilst NOT everyone's favourite stuff.....Old Hank actually had the Alternate and Economy Picking down to a Fine Art before many even knew what he was doing. Look at it this way? Whatever you choose to learn will always stand you in good stead in later Playing Life. Even the most simple pieces (The Shadows stuff ain't SIMPLE) will teach you something. I was only thinking about you earlier and wondering how you were getting on? To the point where I have the germ of an idea forming which might be quite useful.....leave that one with me...I'll keep you posted.

i think that the taking breaks should work fine as rob said even if it is to have a walk round the room, i tend to break down into sections then once i have mastered this, i find it easy to put it all together, but then again you'll know what will work best with you, good luck with it

my missus is getting well peaved, "why do you keep playing the same piece over and over" she pipes. Ahhh while im at it, that gallop type routine on the lower strings in Apache that doesnt come naturally is there a technique or is it just a matter of practice |

Start to think of it in terms of a repeated Triplet? Down Up Down....Repeat......Down Up Down....and so on. Then change it around.....Up Down Up etc etc......This one just comes with Practice I'm afraid. Along with just about everything else to do with an instrument.

*warning slighty Hippy content* i find its best to practice the same song over when u feel like it..not just do it because your trying to learn the song, i take better to it then. |

One thing i have found, there are two ways to play a guitar, either tense and trying to force it, or relaxed and let the fingers walk, the second has taken me 6 months to discover, all i have to do now is relax my neck its killing me.

Having real problems with this Apache intro, I can play the bend and the notes, its either a bad tab or my timing is way out, it sounds nothing like, is there a better way to play this? ------------------------------5------------------- --------------------------------------8----5----- -------5----7b--------5------------------------ -7----------------7------------------------------ --------------------------------------------------- --------------------------------------------------- |

Tab looks wrong to me? This is usually played lower down the neck in the First position i.e. Open. There is nothing to say it cannot be moved, but I have always known it played down around Frets 1 though to 3. Also,,,,Don't forget....Hank didn't really Bend Notes as we know it today. He used his Trem. So he used to slide up to a note and then add trem.
