As some of you know, I like to play fast solos and shredding/sweeping. I currently have 11-49 gauge strings on, but I find these really hard to play on.

I was thinking maybe I should get a lower gauge, 9-46?

I will need another guitar in that case, the shredding guitar. My les paul is my dropped tuning guitar.

9s are too liight. 10s are a good middle ground.

a well set up guitar will make a set of 11s feel like 9s
Playing the right notes in the wrong order since 1994

On my RR3 I use 9-46s which is perfect for that kinda stuff IMO. I do a similar thing to what you're thinking, I use my JS30 for general play and various tunings and use my Floyd-Rose equipped RR3 for all the virtuoso shizz

I use the 10s on my Jackson KV because it has a longer scale length so the relatively light strings cope well in anything down to drop B or sometime B standard if I'm feeling a bit doom-ey

Until a few years ago........I always used 12s on all of the Electrics...........BUT..........I was tuned down a Half Step. The reason why so many of us Old Gits did this was to get the Depth that Heavy Guages give your sound, but by tuning down that Half Step you reduced the String Tension to more managable levels.

As Weez will tell you......It's one thing having 9's and whatnot at Home......But once you are Gigging and the adrenaline kicks in......they become TOO light and you fall off the sides of the Fingerboards. :D Everything he has is on 11s and I know that he finds by the end of the Night he is in danger of having the same problems even with them.

If you want a REAL Fright.......You should try picking up either one of Robin Trower's Guitars......or come to that SRV's Strat.......They were So TOUGH to play it was frightening!!!!!!

I believe the guy from Iced Earth (Jon Schaffer) uses 13's!

I tried 8's once, but they didn't last long before needing replaced. 9s are about ideal, although if tuning lower 10s would be better.
But it also seems to depend a lot on the guitar. Gibson type guitars don't seem to drop tune as well as "super strats", due, I think, to the scale length?

The most frightening experience I have ever had with strings on someone elses Guitar was a Guy who has been playing for YEARS.....He is a Very Old School Player and has been in several Top Name Bands. Anyway.......His Top E is..........a 15!!!!!!!!!! OK this guy has Huge Powerful Hands, he detunes half a Step, but even so!!!!!!!!!

Mind You! God Almighty.....has he ever got a Powerful Guitar Sound!!!!!!

I can honestly say that I have NEVER heard anything quite like the Depth of Sound and Tone that he gets. He uses a Strat by the way!!!!!! B)
