I was just wondering what would be the best way to get started playing the drums as my boyfriend was interested. Does anyone on here play the drums aswell as the guitar, just looking for some advice. :)

All starter kits...are rubbish, so it doesnt matter much, get whatever, u can still practice on them

That may sound like bad advice but really, thats true.. any basic kit u can start building up your arm coordination, it may not sound amazing but u can get a better kit later if u like it!.

He's better off starting on a proper decent kit than a crappy kit or, even worse, a drum machine.

with drums.. if ur just trying u dnt need and amazing sound, u can practice without drums if you know what ur arms should be doing, theres no point blowing loads of cash if u dnt know if ur gonna take to it yet.

You want a 5 peice, maybe Pearl Export or Peavey.

I do play drums aswell as guitar, though I am no expert.

The symbols mae all of the difference though, if you going to get a cheap kit, you might want to replace them to save your ears

Zildjians. They're excellent (also not an expert) but my school's music room used to used stock cymbals and they were painful. Then they upgraded to Zildjians and it was awesome

so a drum machine would not be a good way to go then? thought that might be an idea just for space saving, or even the lack of space he has available, just until he can see if he's any good at it then maybe progress with a full drum kit. But if the drum machine is going to be a waste of time a full kit will have to be considered, i;m sure the neighbours will love that

A drum machine's totally different because his arms will be used to the more cramped layout of the drums, so when he gets on a real kit it'll be very unusual. You can get a full-size drum machine, which isn't bad, it can be used for silent practice or run through an amp, but they're expensive

yeah i have had a look at the price of the full electric drum machines and they are really expensive especially for something he might not stick with, it could turn out like his guitar playing in that he only does it now and again, a full drum kit seems to be the way forward so i'll show him all the posts on this topic and he can decide for himself

Here http://www.guitarampkeyboard.com/en/ludwig-accent/67052

I have heard some good things about Ludwig. The symbols are "licensed by meinl" which I guess is just as bad as a Licensed Floyd Rose?

Looks good anyway and the price isn't too bad

Your boyfriend is very lucky, new drums, 7 string guitars
