Simply answer, no. You don't "need" a keyboardist. Depends on what you want from your music.

And David, there are some good bands with keyboards. Children Of Bodom for example.

You could always use a synthesiser keyboard. Use it for sound effects maybe, add a different sort of atmosphere to your music. For example, Metallica - For whom the bells toll. They have the bells going through the song dont they? Im sure that wasnt done on a guitar or drums lol. You could maybe do things like that on a Keyboard synthesizer.

Just an idea...

Personally im not too keen on the keyboard/synth idea, but it depends what form of metal you are looking at, and how you want it to sound, if you are going for an older or a thrash sound than i wouldnt advise it but otherwise it should sound preety good

it can work REALLY well, But it can also be awful, but there are alot of metal bands that are good and use keyboardists

Dream Theater
Avantasia

For example

I find a keyboard with the right settings can add a enhanced sound when playing. for example take cradle of filth - a death metal black metal band fast heavy drums and pacing guitars but a keyboard breaks it up and gives it a kind of twist and no its doesnt make it gay from a certain someone who posted that earlier. the person that said that obviously dont know his music and is basically talking out of his ass.
sure its all down to personal taste. experiment with it and see how it goes!

Quote Fix'd for truth. And yeah, it depends what you want really. You don't *Need* any instrument, just use the ones you want to.

personally i love a lot of bands with keyboards. DEEP PURPLE, RAINBOW, SYMPHONY X, ELP, THE DOORS etc. do you need keyboards no. any instument used should compliment the song.
and now for something completely different
