Well there are many ways, but by far the most common and easiest is to get a usb interface like the Line 6 toneport Plug your guitar into that, that into your usb hub, and your set

Are these things any good? http://www.etcetera.co.uk/products/CAB819.shtml cos its waay cheaper than a toneport and i have all the effects gear and stuff, just wondering if it would be good quality.. im looking for a pretty professional feeling on these songs, would this do it? [i would go to a studio but i dont have the time and i have almost no money haha] EDIT: how much better would some of these be? worth the price? http://www.musiconmypc.co.uk/art_record_guitar_on_pc.php |

That first one will never get you good quality at all. Even if you have a good sound card, unless your amp has a line level output and your computer has a balanced line in, it's not going to work. If you are pushed for money, get an M-Audio Fast Track USB interface. But you will need a mic to mic your amp. I advise a Shure SM57 That will get you close to professional quality |

Hi, I would recommend buying that cable and buying either a DI box with your effects you currently have (DI box will balance the signals so you can plug in your guitar / or your amp whatever) OR you can buy something like a Line6 tone port / POD or other digital effects if it has a line out which can go into your computers line port. |

Okay, hang on - you guys are saying that, using something like Cubase, just taking the output cable from my FX pedal and sticking it into the back of the computer will not work properly? I've been recording stuff for a while using this exact method and have been really fed up with how bad it always sounds. I thought it was just because I didn't know how to set it all up properly! If I buy one of these Toneport things it will help make my stuff sound much much better? Can someone explain to me how this all works? |

Hi Martin. I "think" your AVT20 "might" have solved your problem for you? If you have a look on the Back, is there a Socket marled "Line Out"? If so......then just run a cable from that down to a Mini Jack Converter and you are in business. I am pretty sure that the AVT20 does have this feature. That means that the AVT becomes your interface and you don't need anything else.

Yes, Rob, the AVT20 has an output marked "DI (emulated)" which does what you suggest. However, I'm not convinced this is the best way to record, as it doesn't sound very good when I record it like that. Well, I bought one of these Toneport things, so when it arrives I'll let you know how it compares.
