So, what are your techniques that really make you yourself? Not normal techniques (eg sweep picking, pinch harmonics etc.), but any cool tricks and techniques you have that spice up your performance. I like making R2 D2 noises by muting the strings at the 18th or so fret with your left hand, then running your plectrum up and down the treble strings over the pickups with your right. Go on, try it! well, i thought i had some techniques of my own. Turnes out someone somewhere already uses them. I started tapping with my pick because I couldn't do it with my fingers and i thought that was my own invention. But it's not
I also use a hair tye thing arounf my head stock and pull it down to mute the strings when I'm tapping or played a solo. Works well, I don't know if somebody elese does it though |

Yeah I use my pick for tapping as well, it's a lot easier. |

Yeah I think you can tap faster with a pick too. That hair thing sounds really useful, I haven't heard of it before. Maybe you're the first to do it Anyway I'm going to try it out, so I'll tell you what I think. |

i dont have any techniques that i personaly invented but i do have a few that make my sound. once i hit the 6 month mark in playing i learned about tremelo picking and i started using it, ever since then i use it quite frequently. then about a year ago i learned about trem picking runs and stuff (shred stuff.) Im not the best at it but i try haha i also have a tendency to play with the edge/tip of my pick, close to how you would if you were playing pinch harmonics. i usualy play that way for my leads. i just feel it gives a sharper more raw tone to it, less round if that makes any sense. well those are about it, not to original or exciting but they shape my playing.

I tried out the fur thing, I had to use a sock though, and I'd been wearing it for two days so it smelt of cheese. But anyway I tried it and its pretty cool, sounds neater 'cos you don't get any messy open strings ringing. What sort of cloth do you use? (a sock doesn't look very suave )

Holding werid stuff up to your pickups is neat, like tv remotes or pretty much anything with a motor. Feedback is probably my favorite thing in the world.... trying to control it and make it into something musical. |

I glued some picks to my handheld fan once and turned it on I played with it. It made some neat harmonic sounds |

Joe Satriani sometimes ties a handkerchief around the neck of his guitar when he's tapping. |

i know a bunch of people who use such things as hairbands to mute strings. i don't. i like to discipline myself to only make the sounds i am trying to make, and hairbands would get in the way of that goal. i hate pick tapping. it sounds cool and all but i don't have alot of picks to spare and i damage my picks while pick tapping, and the fretboard also gets damaged. to me, finger tapping is alot more fluent. but i have no problem with other people doing it. i once taped 3 jim dunlop jazz III picks to a handheld drill and its even faster than my tremolo picking. i couldn't keep up with it  |
