Constant ringing in the ears that goes on 24/7 365 days a year.
It's a constant lowlevel noise in my case, but some people have far more extreme versions of it. It's like a constant whilstling and it can become REALLY annoying.
Caused by years of High Volume Playing and not protecting my ears until far too late. I have also got severely impaired High Register Hearing now as well.......so be careful!!!

My troubles actually started at a Concert that I attended when I was I suppose 22 years old?
I walked past the Left hand PA Bank just as the Guitarist started a Blitzkrieg Solo consisting of an opening Barrage of Pinched Harmonics. Because he used an AC30 with a Treble Booster for Overdrive the whole lot was being fed through the PA.

So that was Goodbye to my Left Eardrum!! I had ruptured it and whilst "some" hearing returned......I suppose I have about 20% on my Left Side.

Be aware Guys........You really DO need to think before subjecting yourselves to too much Close Range Volume!

On a more humourous note..........
Do You Know How To Tell Whether The Gig/Rehearsal/Whatever has been TOO Loud?

Simple........ Block Both Ears and then whistle! You'll know soon enough with what can happen next!!!

on the earplugs front - I can't recommend them enough and as soon as I can remember not to spend all my cash I'm going to stump up the £170 or so to have custom moulds made up - like a lot of the festival bands were using this year.

Other than that, there are semi moulded ones made by doc's pro plugs (tried them, didn't think they were great) - about 12 quid or so, Etymotic or Elacin ER-20 are good - I use these at the moment and the attenuate the sound by around 20 db. It's still pretty clear and you do lose some frequencies, but you wouldn't really notice to be honest - about a tenner - search ER-20 on ebay. Then you've got the foam ones that just cut the volume and that's about it. I've tried these but they weren't that good really.

There you go!

no?

go and play in a big venue with a big PA and a loud drummer with a concert snare
you can turn your amp down as much as you want, your ears are still gonna hurt

Doesn't matter who has played louder than who, through what sized PA etc........ If you don't look after your ears, you are making a huge mistake. There are a few of us on this forum who have suffered significant Hearing Loss and Damage and I KNOW that we'd all say the same thing to anyone who is Gigging these days......Wear Ear Protection!!

The sort of Damage that we are talking about cannot be repaired. You only get One Chance and it's a tragedy if you end up damaging your hearing to the extent that some of us have.

I have said it before on this forum..... I have raging Tinitus and it is an absolute BASTARD. It is my own fault that this has happened and given my time over again.....I'd be at the Head of The Queue for Ear Protection!!!

absolutely
I did read somewhere there was a device for treatment of tinnitus, but I don't know how effective it is and like Rob, I was pretty sure it was untreatable, particularly if it leads to hearing loss.

I have a small amount which I only notice when it's nearly silent, pretty much at bed time, but I use my earplugs every time I play or watch a band. A friend of the mrs has tinnitus so badly, she carries her plugs everywhere and uses them anywhere the volumes are a bit high.

Yes there is indeed such a Machine. I was finally transfered to the Local Hospital's ENT Man because the Tinitus had actually started to get too much to put up with and he gave me one of these Boxes. I have a problem with it in as much as the only one of the 7 Noises it makes that works for me........ is a Stream!!

Now........Running Water does tend to have an effect upon the Human Anatomy ;) so instead of spending a sleepless night because of the incredibly loud noises caused by the Tinitus.......One spends most of the night dashing off to the Loo.

Ho Hum

i think the main point here is to pay attention to what these guys are telling us, don't take your hearing for granted, take care of it so that in years to come you will still be able to listen to music etc and avoid any problems later in life. i for one will be more carefull in the future, i liek going to gigs but i hate it afterwards when i can't hear a thing and there's ringing, i would never want it to be a permanent thing would drive me nuts
