At the risk of sounding like an old guy preaching.... Any younger guys on here who do NOT wear ear protection, you really should start now. Anytime you're around loud stuff, like concerts, band practice, mowing the grass, anything. Even at home if you've got your amp cranked. There's lots of expensive stuff out there, but the little throw-away foam plugs are decent enough. Again, I don't wanna sound preachy, but in high school, I probably went to a hundred concerts, plus my own gigs and everything, and now pounding a nail will get my ears ringing. |

I noticed the other week when watching the download festival that most of the bands wear plugs. Even the bassist from metallica have them in. |

Yup. Eric Clapton is deaf in one eaer from standing sideways on stage, and having that ear face a bunch of Marshalls for so many years. I've even had old guys on bar bands tell me they have to keep trying to find brighter strings every few years, as their hearing is getting so bad. Protect your ears man. |

thanks for the tips!! I will take this into account at my next gig. I'll just use the ones that go behind your head. I can't stand it at gigs as it is. It hurts my ears to have my amp past 1. At gigs, it is around 7 depending on the place. |

Itll muffle it a little, but the pressure from the plugs will improve clarity a little bit. Just like if you push earphones into your ear a little. Plugs are a good idea. But me, i love it when im jamming with the guys, and then realise i lost all sense of hearing......i usually stand next to my drummers 21" crash.....lol! |

I thought a cymbal that big would have been a ride cymbal? I'm sooo gonna buy ear protection, and hearing protection will not stop claritiy, infact it will improve it becuse your ears won't be so distorted by the noise levels. U can get hearing protection out there for £600(!) but i'm just gonna get sum 99p plugs next time i order from my local german music superstore They are a gd idea, my ears ring if i use my SS bass amp on like 2 or 3 or somtheng like that. |
U know ur an emo when u say "the only reson i didn't drown myself in the bath last night was becuse the water was too hot!"

when doing a concert, bands usually mic the amps to stereos around the place they're playing. this is usually done indoors. outdorrs, i'm not sure if they just raise the volume on the amps till its loud enough. this is to protect their ears.. and even after that, they still wear ear plugs. ear plugs actually make things clearer that are close to you, in this case the amp, and the audience will not be heard as much so earplugs have a plus on that too. |

Whatever else you may or may not do....Wear Ear Plugs. I am now a long term Tinitus Sufferer and it isn't FUN....In Fact.....It sucks. All My Own Fault!! Have a bit of respect for your Ears....Believe me...You need to look after them! |
