Plugging Strait Into Comp

Advanced Member Posts: 203 Group: Members Member #2 Joined: June 24, 2006	For all you recording people out there, WOuld it sound bad If I directly pluged my guitar into my comp and recorded to should I do something like this: SM57---xlr to 1/4 cable-----1/4 to 1/8 adapter---comp? Oh and of coarse the SM57 would be miking my amp.

Admin Posts: 1,669 Group: Admin Member #1 Joined: June 24, 2006	well, that is a better idea than pluging your guitar directly into the computer but most computers soundcards are not very good. You will get ok results but if you were to get a external soundcard (USB interface) like a Line 6 UX1/2, M Audio Fast Track or something like that, you will get much better results

Retired Posts: 136 Group: Retired Member #4 Joined: June 24, 2006	micing the amp is how i do it and then the mic goes into my computer, the sound quality isnt the best but it works. the only time you can get decent results from plugging the guitar into the computer is if you put a pedal in the mix ther, such as guitar>distortion pedal>computer. otherwise the tone will completely suck.

Thanks I think my comp card is rather shitty but I recorded a Sample for the DS-1 and it came out OK, It would sound better with the amp miked tho, so I think im going to pick up a cheap one off ebay.

Advanced Member Posts: 203 Group: Members Member #2 Joined: June 24, 2006	I made a recording with plugging strait into the computer. http://fenderguitars315.dmusic.com/ Its came out nice, I used my Jagmaster, Neck Pickup,voulume up all the way,Tone at 2-3. Just the intro ill go back and do the overdrived parts later.

Member Posts: 45 Group: Members Member #1,438 Joined: September 6, 2007	It might be worth looking at getting a stand alone multitracker and then transfering to the computer to edit. I would also sugest a condenser mic (note this needs phantom power) for recording things like vocals, they can also sound good with guitar amps!
